Boxing coach Mukesh Rai joins SAI national centre of excellence

NAMCHI,: Namchi’s Mukesh Rai has been appointed as the assistant boxing coach at Sports Authority of India National Centre of Excellence (NCOE), Rohtak, Haryana.
Mukesh Rai, a boxing player-turned coach, is one of the most successful boxing coaches from Sikkim. The Singithang resident has also coached Indian under-17 junior men’s squad. Besides, he has represented State in various junior and senior level boxing competitions at national level between 2000 and 2007.
"I am extremely grateful towards State Sports & Youth Affairs department and various individual for their support throughout my career including the athletes, coaches and officials without whom I would not have been able to dream big and work hard towards achieving my goal," said Rai in a telephonic conversation from Haryana.
Rai has also coached different Indian teams for international competitions, viz. Asian School Boys Boxing Championship 2019 in Kuwait and Asian Junior Men Boxing Championship 2021 in Dubai.
The AIBA-certified coach is an assistant coach in State Sports department. Under his guidance, Sikkim boxers have been successful in bringing home various medals and accolades from various tournaments including North East Olympic Games, National Youth Boxing Championship, Men’s Senior National Boxing Championship, National School Games and East Zone Boxing Championship.
Mukesh, who did his schooling from Namchi, started boxing at a very young age of 12 years upon his selection for Namchi SAI SAG centre in 2000.
In 2013, Mukesh completed his diploma from National Institute of Sports, Kolkata in boxing. He initially worked as physical education teacher in New Light Academy here. From 2015, he started serving as an assistant boxing coach under Sports department for south district.
