GANGTOK, : Local residents of Saffo and adjoining villages in Upper Dzongu are elated after getting an alternative and quicker connectivity with the launch of a 180-ft bailey bridge over Kanaka river at Sankhalang along Sankhalang-Toong road.
The bridge was installed by 107 RCC, GREF, Border Roads Organisation with a completion period of 15 days.
“This bridge was indeed the need of the hour since we have been walking on foot to reach the suspension bridge for the past 28 years. We had to travel 56 km from our villages to reach Mangan, the nearest BAC whose total distance has now come down to 20 km due to the construction of this new bridge. It’s no less than a boon to us as it has not only made our travel convenient but will also save our time especially during the time of emergencies”, shared one of the villagers.
The villagers expressed their gratitude to BRO and 107 RCC for providing connectivity to the remote villages. Sikkim being a border State, it is essential to have a good connectivity, they said. They urged BRO to consider widening of the roads which connect the bridge to the villages.
Col Vishal Sharma, Commander 758 BRTF, Ravi Kumar, EE (Civil) OC 107 RCC GREF, CM Pandey, AE Civil OIC, Captain Nikita Gupta, task force were present during the launch of the bridge along with local villagers.
