CM calls on LS Speaker over ‘foreigner’ row

GANGTOK,: Chief Minister PS Golay on Monday called on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at Parliament House, New Delhi.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Sikkim Legislative Assembly Speaker Arun Upreti, Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba and Tourism minister B.S. Panth, informs a CMO release.

At the meeting, Golay submitted about the observation of the Supreme Court in its January 13 verdict which had given impression that the Sikkimese Nepalis are persons of foreign origin settled in Sikkim. He also apprised about the stand of State government and the sentiment of the Sikkimese towards the observation which was made in the recently pronounced judgement by the apex court.

The Chief Minister informed that the State government has filed review petition in the Supreme Court to expunge the said observations and to ensure that the sanctity of the Article 371 F is integrally maintained.

The Speaker informed that he will make sure that the sanctity of the provisions made under the Constitution for the rights and safeguards of Sikkimese people shall be protected, the release mentions.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister invited the Lok Sabha Speaker to visit Sikkim. The Speaker instantly agreed to visit soon and also appreciated the achievements made in a short period of time by the new government, the release informs.
