Landslides batter NH 10, two dead at Mamkhola

DARJEELING,: Continuous downpour since past 24 hours triggered a rash of slides across the hills with maximum damage reported from Kalimpong district on Friday with two deaths and 3-4 persons missing at Mamkhola.
A group of workers were engaged at Mamkhola for construction of Sevoke-Rangpo railway project when their camp was swept away.
According to Kalimpong district administration, two persons were killed in the Mamkhola landslide – one from Nepal and other from Alipurduar.
Kalimpong SP Hari Krishna Pai said: “There was a labour camp of ITDCL rail construction company at Mamkhola near Rangpo under Kalimpong police station. Today early morning, the rivulet swelled due to constant rain and fall of boulders which swept away the labour camp”.
Two injured workers were rescued and four more workers are missing, said the SP.
However, the district administration said only three are missing.
Search and rescue operations are continuing at Mamkhola.
Meanwhile, three persons were injured at Chisopani at Kalimpong when a major landslide damaged four houses in various degrees Thursday night. The active landslide poses threat to about 22 households who were evacuated to a nearby community hall.
The NH 10, the main route connecting Sikkim and Kalimpong to Siliguri, was also disrupted due to landslides at five locations – Melli, Adheri Khola, Mamkhola and Bhalu Khola.
Similarly, the road connecting Darjeeling to Jorethang in Sikkim has also been closed due to landslide at Tukvar.
