Media doing unbiased, independent journalism in Sikkim: Upreti

GANGTOK,: Urban Development minister Arun Uperti on Tuesday said journalism in Sikkim is unbiased and under no pressure from any quarters.

“There is unbiased journalism in Sikkim without any pressure, there is no threat to media here and media are free to write. Media in Sikkim are working in an independent manner,” said the minister. He was addressing the Ram Patro Memorial Award ceremony held at Gangtok as the chief guest.

Upreti also lauded the efforts of media in Sikkim for their dedication to serve the society with dissemination of information through their news reports. The media in Sikkim are working day and night in a relentless manner for the society, he said.

The minister appreciated the initiative of SIKKIM EXPRESS and Himali Bela to fete the hardworking journalists through the annual Ram Patro Memorial Award.

Upper Tadong MLA G.T. Dhungel, the guest of honour, referred to journalism as the “voice of the voiceless” that addresses the communication gap between the people and the authorities. Sometimes right things do not reach the authorities due to the communication gap and it is here the media comes to the forefront, he said adding that media plays a vital role as the fourth pillar of a democracy.

Chief Minister’s press advisor C.P. Sharma lauded media as the frontline ambassadors of the society despite journalism being a difficult profession. He also highlighted the importance and relevance of print media in this digital era as newspapers are documents of history.
