Ram Patro memorial awards to Pankaj Dhungel, Prashant Acharya

GANGTOK,: The Ram Patro Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism 2021-22 was on Tuesday conferred on young journalist Pankaj Dhungel during the award function organised by SIKKIM EXPRESS and Himali Bela at Hotel Tashi Delek, Gangtok.

Urban Development minister Arun Upreti handed away the prestigious award to the 30-year-old journalist in the presence of Upper Tadong MLA G.T. Dhungel, Chief Minister’s press advisor C.P. Sharma, SIKKIM EXPRESS editor Amit Patro and Mala Rana Patro, the chairperson of Ram Patro Memorial Award Committee.

The award is named after late Ram Patro, the founder of SIKKIM EXPRESS and Himali Bela to celebrate responsible and courageous journalism. It is presented annually to journalists from Sikkim and neighbouring Darjeeling-Kalimpong region.

In his acceptance speech, Dhungel thanked his parents and well-wishers for their support that helped him in the advancement of his journalism career. He mentioned that the Ram Patro memorial award is an encouragement and testimony of his journalism.

Dhungel is the Sikkim correspondent for Guwahati-based national digital news platform East Mojo. He had also worked for SIKKIM EXPRESS in past.

Similarly, the Ram Patro Memorial Award for ‘Best working journalist in SIKKIM EXPRESS and Himali Bela 2021-22’ was presented to Prashant Acharya, the Siliguri correspondent of the two Gangtok-based publications.

Upper Tadong MLA G.T. Dhungel handed away the award to Acharya.

Acharya, a senior journalist who has worked for various national and regional media, thanked his parents for their support towards his career. He also thanked the Ram Patro Memorial Award Committee for recognising his hard work with the award.

On the occasion, Chet Kumar Gurung was felicitated as the best employee by SIKKIM EXPRESS and Himali Bela. He works in the printing press section of SIKKIM EXPRESS and Himali Bela.

Chief Minister’s Press Advisor C.P. Sharma handed away the letter of appreciation to the SIKKIM EXPRESS employee.

Earlier in his welcome address, SIKKIM EXPRESS editor Amit Patro spoke about the founding aims and objectives of constituting journalism award in memory of late Ram Patro. He shared that the awards were presented annually since 2005 but could not be given in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid pandemic.

Patro mentioned that the Ram Patro award this occasion celebrates the relentless efforts of Sikkim journalists to give continuous and factual reporting during Covid pandemic of two years. He also thanked the Government of Sikkim and Chief Minister P.S. Golay for declaring media as frontliners in Sikkim and facilitating priority Covid vaccination for the journalists. 

The award function, attended by local media fraternity and guests, was hosted by Satyadeep Chettri with vote of thanks presented by staff reporter Dichen Ongmu Bhutia.
