SILIGURI,: A team of Sikkim Agriculture department on Thursday visited Fulbari land port on Indo-Bangladesh border to make arrangements for export of goods to Bangladesh.
J.P. Pradhan, nodal officer of agriculture department, said they were there to inspect the trading and export process and to see the infrastructure for the business with Bangladesh. The department is keen to export organic products including large cardamom, oranges and ginger to Bangladesh via Fulbari land port.
"The tag of the organic products that comes from Sikkim to regulated market at Siliguri gets lost and we can’t track the exports. So we have visited for the first time to see how we can send our products directly to neighbouring countries," said Pradhan.
Pradhan informed that after the inspection, the matter will be discussed and farmers and growers will be informed about the business opportunity with the neighbouring country.
Sikkim has already been recognised as an organic State. Among the products grown in the Himalayan State, oranges, ginger, cardamom and medicinal plants are in large demand in Bangladesh.
