GANGTOK,: Sikkim went down 0-2 against title favourites Manipur in the final of 1st North East Women’s Football League played on Saturday at Imphal.
An own goal in first half and a 81st minute goal contributed to Sikkim’s defeat against Manipur which had a squad full of national players. The Sikkim team had to be contended with the runners-up trophy.
However, Sikkim team returns home on a high note having delivered an excellent performance throughout the tournament. In the league round, Sikkim won five games and drew two matches to take second position in the standings with 17 points. They went on to defeat Arunachal Pradesh 3-0 in the semi-final match.
“Definitely, it was a fruitful journey with a runners-up position for team Sikkim, especially after two dark years of corona lockdown. Undoubtedly, it was a great exposure for the team and players. Sikkim Football Association congratulates the team and wishing good luck for the future upcoming tournament,” said the Sikkim Football Association in a press statement.
