GANGTOK,: Suren Chettri from Sikkim is leading Indian senior women’s national team for the u-23 Three Nations Cup at Sweden as an interim head coach. The 23-member Indian squad is flying to Helsingborg from Mumbai on Sunday evening.
India is playing against Sweden on June 22 and against USA on June 25 in this exposure trip, which Suren sees as a huge platform for the Indian players.
“Playing against the world number one ranked and number two ranked teams is a big platform for our players. It is a one-time opportunity for the players and coach,” said the 44-year-old.
Indian women’s football team is currently ranked 56th.
Suren hails from Namchi where he works as the football coach under Sports & Youth Affairs department.
Besides Suren, midfielder Anju Tamang is also in the Indian squad. She recently bagged the Women Player of the Year 2022 award from the Football Players Association of India.
The 3-Nations Cup with the senior team is another prestigious assignment handed to Suren by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). He is the head coach of the u-20 national women’s team and Indian Arrows women’s team.
The national team for the 3-Nations Cup had been training at Pune from June 13 onwards.
