Those were the jarring images you thought could only happen in India. Mob violence, utter lawlessness and little regard to the institution of democracy. Not something you would expect from a country like the United States of America. But we were proved wrong.
We watched with shock and disbelief as supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol building where the Congress was meeting, in a bid to overturn the results of the November 3 election won by Joe Biden. As the Joint session of the US Congress convened to certify the Electoral Votes of the 2020 election, President Trump hosted what was billed as the “Save America Rally” on the White House Ellipse, an hour-long rant of his repeated conspiracy theories laced with insults against Democrats and Republicans who had the courage to say "no" to his desire to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The chaotic scenes unfolded after Trump – who has been condemned for inciting violence by spreading falsehoods about the election and refusing to admit defeat – addressed thousands of protesters in Washington, using his speech to repeat lies that the election was stolen from him. In stating the election was stolen and that he will never concede, the President’s words “we’re going to try and give our Republicans, the weak ones, because the strong ones don’t need any of our help, we’re going to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country” fueled the violence and destruction at the US Capitol that followed.
This shameful act of lawlessness has prompted calls by some lawmakers to remove Trump from office before Joe Biden is sworn in on 20 January. The events have renewed questions as to whether Trump could be declared unfit for for office, or charged with a criminal act. Other Democrats issued calls for Trump to be impeached anew, with less than two weeks left in his presidency.
This Trump-encouraged insurrection is likely to send the country down a politically and socially turbulent road. Americans should be united, no matter which side of the aisle they lean towards, in condemning the unacceptable siege and desecration of the US Capitol.
