Tourism Industry in Sikkim

MP SUBBA

Tourism can be a viable Industry in Sikkim, the scope of this sector (industry) appears  to have huge potential in every nook & corner of the State. The rich cultural heritages,   peace and tranquility, beautiful forest & pleasing greenery, melodious warbling & rolling  sound  of the birds,  are the fundamental characteristics that makes Sikkim a favourable tourist spot. The small but beautifully located landlocked state Sikkim is blessed with abundant natural resources. The hills and mountains, streams and rivers, flora and fauna and more importantly the simplicity and a warm  hospitality as the integral part of culture, the Sikkim appears to be a favourable  tourism centric location.

By and large, the domestic tourists seem to have been profusely attracted by those  special attributes which are brilliantly gifted by  nature. The government with clear understanding of the significance of tourism also is focusing special attention for flourishing the tourism sector and engaging the young educated youths to guide them to be self reliant. Nevertheless, inculcating a new trend of entrepreneurship and navigating anything on their own has been a tough challenge for the government as well. The easy going and casual approach has,  of course, weakened the inner strength of the youngsters, though they have enormous potential.  The new approach of entrepreneurship  needs lots of motivation, moral strength, courage, attitude reshaping, conviction and commitment and vision and goals. The government has taken up a farsighted plan to encourage the youngsters. However, it appears far behind the clarity of understanding  the basic objectivity of the mission and youths  yet appear in dilemma.

Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors that has a significant impact on the growing Economy. It is an ever-growing industry with bright and high potential job opportunities not only in the state but across the globe. Students have endless career opportunities to catch hold of this fast growing industry of tourism. The youngsters who can't make a start up mission on their own stand, they can choose various options like tour operators, customs services, operating homestay from minimal start up investment policy. Trackers, guides, helpers are other scopes with huge potential to engage people in the tourism sector. The fields like customer ground handling, domestic tourist, tour operators, transport managers, holiday consultant are different sectors where educated youths can work. For professional enhancement the Diploma in travel and tourism management, hospitality management, tourist guide, tourism studies, travel management etc are the prerequisite of the career option for those youths who are interested in job opportunities.

Tourism industry in terms of Sikkim, it is absolutely viable with a plethora of opportunities from ground level of home stay to mega tourism planning. However, the educated youths need to grasp the opportunity in the right moment, every field and sector has limitations which might reach to its climax and the locals may get eliminated from the competitive circle and become a mere spectator, I would apprehend. It is affordable and accessible to everyone provided one can possess interest, innovation and vision to see the concepts of tourism. Tourism can be opted as a profession and it can be further  inherited to next generations. Comparatively, tourism is more viable to transfer down the line for generation after generation.  No other sectors can have such an opportunity but tourism is one special sector which remains at your disposal and liberty to keep accelerating, it is your capability to explore, it simply needs your planning, innovation and homework. It can be an unending process subject to a tourism friendly and uninterrupted  atmosphere.  Tourism sector, which can grow and keep a growing economy, is essential for every state and society. Economic sustainability is a dire  need of every household  which helps to grow the state economy and mitigate the unemployment crisis. Tourism can only be an alternative source of raising the economy. Therefore, the  untiring efforts of the government to encourage the tourism sector to build up a strong economy and resolve the challenging unemployment problems in the state are glaring examples.

Thus, maintaining peace and tranquillity, smooth flow of traffic and uninterrupted  road communication are the major concerns that need to be ensured in public interest. Hypothetically, tourism is a sector which enables the healthy economy of the State and self-reliant needs priority. Massive awareness and mobilization has another paramount importance for which we stand today at the crossroad.
