180-member Sikkim contingent for NE Games

GANGTOK, March 14: Sikkim will field 180 athletes at the North East Games 2023 in Nagaland across 10 different sporting disciplines.  The North East Games, supported by Indian Olympic Association, will take place from March 18 to 23.

Addressing a press conference here in the capital, Sikkim Olympic Association (SOA) president Kuber Bhandari said Sikkim is participating in 10 disciplines out of 15 disciplines and this year there are no age categories.

 

Sikkim is participating in archery, badminton, boxing, taekwondo, athletics, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, wushu and Pencak Silat. Of the 93 male and 61 female athletes some were selected from the trails conducted by different sports associations and some are rank holders of State championships. Likewise, there will be 26 officials from Sikkim.

The SOA president said, “Considering the determination, practice hard work put in by our athletes, we are hopeful that they will bring laurels to the State.”

He added that like last year, the SOA has decided to give incentives the teams and individual players this year as well. The teams winning gold, silver and bronze medal will receive Rs. 40,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 20,000 respectively. Among the individual winners, the incentives will be Rs. 15,000 for gold, Rs. 10,000 for silver and Rs. 5000 for bronze.

BB Subba has been named the Chef De Mission for Sikkim and Sandhya Gurung the Deputy De Mission.  

The NE Games will be held across three venues of Kohima, Dimapur and Chumoukedima.
