Dear Editor,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper and your official Facebook page, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Government of Sikkim for its commendable decision to suspend animal slaughter from February 18 to March 18 in observance of religious and cultural traditions. This thoughtful step reflects deep respect for the spiritual sentiments of the people and promotes compassion, peace, and harmony in our society.
Sikkim has always been known for its unity in diversity and strong cultural values. Such decisions strengthen public faith in the government and preserve the sanctity of our traditions.
In this regard, I humbly request the concerned authorities to also consider suspending animal slaughter during the holy month of Sawan, which holds immense significance for Lord Shiva devotees. During this sacred month, many people observe fasting, offer prayers, and maintain spiritual discipline. A temporary restriction during Sawan would help preserve the purity and religious atmosphere associated with this deeply respected period.
Likewise, Sola Sarad is a spiritually important time when families perform rituals and prayers in remembrance of ancestors with devotion and sincerity. It is a period of reflection, respect, and cultural continuity. Suspending animal slaughter during Sola Sarad would show equal sensitivity toward the religious and emotional sentiments attached to these sacred observances.
Such measures will not only honour religious beliefs but also promote compassion towards living beings and strengthen moral and cultural values in society.
I sincerely hope the authorities will consider extending similar restrictions during Sawan and Sola Sarad in the larger interest of cultural harmony and religious respect.
Yours etc,
Viniv Bastakoti,
