GANGTOK, : A high-level meeting chaired by Murlidhar Mohol, Minister of State
for Civil Aviation, was held on Tuesday at Udaan Bhawan, New Delhi, to
deliberate on the resumption of flights at Pakyong Airport, Sikkim. The meeting
was convened at the request of Indra Hang Subba, Member of Parliament (Lok
Sabha) from Sikkim, a press release informs.
Senior
officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and representatives from
SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Alliance Air participated in the discussions.
Balasaheb
Pote, Airport Director (APD) of Pakyong Airport, made a detailed presentation
on the current operational status of the airport, recent developments, and
future plans for improving facilities and ensuring long-term flight operations.
The
Lok Sabha MP stressed the strategic importance of Pakyong Airport in improving
connectivity for Sikkim and the surrounding region. He highlighted the
difficulties faced by residents, tourists, and businesses due to the suspension
of flights, which has hindered travel, tourism, and economic activity.
The
meeting explored solutions to operational and technical challenges, including
weather conditions, deployment of suitable aircraft, and flight scheduling to
ensure greater reliability.
MoS
Mohol assured full support from the Ministry in coordinating with airlines and
relevant authorities to expedite the restoration of air services. Airline
representatives expressed readiness to collaborate in ensuring sustainable
flight operations from Pakyong.
Indra
Hang expressed gratitude to the MoS, Ministry officials, and airline
representatives for their commitment to restoring this critical air link for
Sikkim, the release mentions.
