Damp Distress: How to Eliminate Musty Smells from Your Home During the Monsoon

Shahnaz Husain

The monsoon brings welcome relief from the summer heat, but it also brings excess humidity, damp interiors, and that stubborn musty smell that can linger in every corner of the house. High humidity—often between 60 and 80 per cent—traps moisture in walls, fabrics, carpets, and furniture, creating ideal conditions for mould, mildew, and bacteria to thrive.

Fortunately, a few simple measures can help keep your home fresh and fragrant throughout the rainy season.

1. Light Scented Candles

Rainy weather naturally enhances fragrances, making scented candles especially effective during the monsoon. Choose calming aromas such as jasmine, lavender, rose, sandalwood, eucalyptus, or mint.

Jasmine creates a soothing ambience, while eucalyptus and mint refresh the air and cut through damp odours. Lavender promotes relaxation, and rose adds warmth and elegance, making your home feel cosy on gloomy days.

2. Use a Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is one of the best ways to control excess moisture indoors. It helps maintain healthy humidity levels, preventing mould growth while protecting wooden furniture, books, fabrics, and electronic appliances from moisture damage.

Portable electric dehumidifiers work well in bedrooms and living spaces. For smaller areas, natural alternatives such as bamboo charcoal bags or bowls of rock salt can also absorb excess moisture effectively.

3. Freshen with Essential Oils

Essential oils not only leave your home smelling pleasant but also help eliminate odours because of their natural antibacterial properties. Tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, and lavender oils are excellent choices during the rainy season.

Add a few drops to a diffuser or prepare a simple room spray by mixing the oil with water. These natural fragrances help purify the air while keeping damp smells at bay.

4. Try Aromatic Room Sprays

Room sprays provide an instant solution to musty odours without the need for flames or electricity. Made with essential oils and herbal extracts, they fill your home with a refreshing fragrance while creating a calming atmosphere.

You can prepare a natural room spray at home using water, witch hazel, and a few drops of your favourite essential oil, or choose a good-quality ready-made spray. Regular use keeps interiors smelling clean, fresh, and inviting throughout the monsoon.
