Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee stands as one of the most visionary nation-builders in modern Indian history. A scholar, statesman, and fearless patriot, his life was dedicated to the ideals of national unity, cultural integrity, and sovereign strength. His unwavering commitment to the idea of a united India continues to inspire generations and remains deeply relevant in today’s vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
Born in 1901, Dr. Mookerjee was a brilliant academic who rose to become the youngest Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of 33. However, his calling extended far beyond academia. He entered public life with a profound sense of duty towards the nation, especially during a time when India was navigating the challenges of independence and partition.
As India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, he played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for the country’s industrial growth. Yet, it was his ideological clarity and courage in political thought that truly distinguished him. Deeply concerned about policies that he believed threatened national unity, he resigned from the cabinet, placing principle above power.
Dr. Mookerjee was a firm advocate of one nation, one constitution, and one flag. His opposition to the special status granted under Article 370 to Jammu & Kashmir stemmed from his belief that such provisions weakened the nation’s unity. His iconic slogan, “Ekdeshmein do Vidhan, do Pradhan, aur do Nishan — nahichalenge,” was not merely political rhetoric but a reflection of his deep-rooted conviction that India must stand united in every sense.
His ultimate sacrifice came in 1953, when he was arrested during his protest against the permit system in Jammu & Kashmir. His untimely death under detention marked a turning point in India’s political history and cemented his legacy as a martyr for national integration.
Today, when we speak of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” we are, in essence, witnessing the realization of Dr. Mookerjee’s dream. The abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the strengthening of national unity echo his long-standing vision of an India that is indivisible in spirit and governance.
Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee’s life teaches us that true patriotism lies not in words, but in action and sacrifice.
