GANGTOK,: A day after members of Tibetan Special Army and Indian Reserve Battalion scuffled during a football match at Rabong, the local residents carried out a protest rally at Rabong Bazaar today, shouting 'Tibetans go back'.
Three IRB personnel were injured during the brawl on Saturday with one was referred to STNM Hospital in Gangtok, one to Namchi district hospital and one admitted to Rabong health centre.
Members of Tibetan Special Army who were in the crowd indulged in a brawl with Indian Reserve Battalion during a game between 3rd IRBn Manglay and Army United (SFF Rabong) at Victoria Cross Ganju Lama SSS playground.
Five Tibetan settlers who were involved in the brawl were arrested at Rabong on Sunday and a case has been registered against them u/s 353/341/332/186/34.
Sikkim Police spokesperson DIG Tashi Wangyal Bhutia informed, "The protest in Rabong was more of a gathering of Rabong residents. They dispersed after the arrests were made. We do not have a number on the people involved so more arrests can happen. We do not have a number on the people involved. The IRB jawans are seriously injured, we cannot tell the extent as they are under medical examination”.
DIG has appealed people not to take the incident from a communal angle. “It’s a stray incident that occurred during a football match,” he said.
