Follow-up on NCORD Meet to Address Drug Threat in Schools

Sonam Tshiring Tamang Ex-Special Secretary Tadong, Gangtok, Sikkim

Dear Editor,

I am writing to commend the recent NCORD meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary at Tashiling Secretariat, Gangtok, which highlighted the urgent need to shield school children from the drug threat. The emphasis laid by the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and DIGP Gangtok Range on curbing the drug menace is truly praiseworthy.

As a follow-up to my letter published in Sikkim Express on July 19, 2025, the civil society is eagerly awaiting practical actions on the issues discussed. Under the guidance of the Chief Secretary and the able leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri P.S. Tamang (Golay), we expect the nodal departments—Social Welfare, Health and Family Welfare, and Education Department—to play a proactive role in:

1. Implementing awareness programmes in schools and colleges.

2. Conducting workshops and seminars on the ill effects of drug abuse.

3. Providing counselling and support services for affected children and families.

4. Collaborating with NGOs and community organisations to strengthen the anti-drug campaign.

5. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of these initiatives.

6. Partnering with spiritual groups to impart spiritual growth, compassion, and values that promote a healthy and positive lifestyle.

Furthermore, we would like to draw the government’s attention to the increasing cases of child abuse and rape, which is a matter of grave concern. We urge the government to take stringent measures to address this issue and ensure the safety and well-being of our children.

We believe that a holistic approach—combining awareness, support, and spiritual growth—can help our youth make informed choices and lead a life free from substance abuse and exploitation.

We hope to see tangible steps taken by the government and look forward to updates on the progress through your esteemed newspaper.

Thank you for your platform in highlighting these critical issues.
