Follow-up recce of proposed Bakuchen-Tamze Trekking Trail

GANGTOK,: Tourism and Civil Aviation Department conducted a follow-up recce of proposed Bakuchen-Tamze Trekking Trail to advance sustainable adventure tourism in line with the Government of Sikkim's vision of promoting sustainable, community-based and environmentally responsible tourism.

The one-day recce of the proposed summer/monsoon trekking trail along the Tamzey to Bakuchen valley along Tsomgo axis, was conducted on July 17 by the officials of Tourism and Civil Aviation Department. The team, which was led by Hondala Gyaltsen, Secretary, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, undertook a comprehensive field inspection to assess the feasibility, accessibility, ecological sensitivity, safety parameters, and tourism potential of the proposed trekking route.

The visit focused on evaluating the trail in accordance with the Department's guidelines for the development of safe, sustainable, and world-class trekking destinations, a press release informs.

During the recce, Kazi Sherpa, Joint Director (Adventure), presented a detailed technical assessment of the proposed trekking trail. He elaborated on the route alignment, terrain profile, altitude gradients, safety measures, campsite suitability, water sources, environmental considerations, and other technical parameters essential for developing a trekking route that meets established standards.

His presentation highlighted the immense potential of the Tamze trail to emerge as a premier adventure tourism destination while ensuring responsible tourism practices and ecological conservation, the release mentions.

The recce team also included Dr. Prerna Chamling, Special Secretary, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department; Tenzing Gelay, Additional Director (Adventure); Shri Kazi Sherpa, Joint Director (Adventure); Manoj Chettri, Deputy Director (Adventure); Brinda Mohan Subba, Assistant Director (Adventure); Bijeta Chettri, Assistant Director (Information and Publicity) along with officials from the Adventure Section of the department and members of the local community.

During the inspection, the team conducted a detailed evaluation of the trail's terrain, accessibility, scenic value, environmental sensitivity, and infrastructure requirements. Interactions with local residents and stakeholders provided valuable insights into the area's tourism potential and reaffirmed the importance of community participation in developing tourism initiatives that are inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial to local livelihoods.

Army personnel of 11GR of the Indian Army extended valuable support throughout the recce by providing security and ensuring the safe movement of the inspection team in the area. The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department expressed its sincere appreciation to the Indian Army for its cooperation and unwavering support towards promotion of tourism in the State, which contributed significantly to the successful completion of the field assessment.

Nestled amidst pristine forests, breathtaking mountain landscapes, and rich biodiversity, Tamze possesses immense potential to become one of Sikkim's most sought-after trekking destinations, especially drying the summer months when the valley is known to be covered with different varieties of wildflower blooms, particularly Iris. The proposed trekking trail is envisioned not only as an adventure trail but also promote the State’s eco-tourism and showcase the region's natural wealth while also providing a means for generating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities through responsible tourism, the release mentions.
