From Tumin in East Sikkim to Fashion Institute of Technology, New York: The Inspiring Journey of Kushalta Nepal

GANGTOK,: In a remarkable story of perseverance, self-belief, and excellence, Kushalta Nepal, a young and talented student from Tumin Barang, East Sikkim, has carved a path that leads from the serene Himalayan State to the global fashion hub of New York. Her journey stands as a proud moment not only for her family but also for the entire State of Sikkim.

Born and brought up in a humble yet supportive environment, Kushalta is the granddaughter of Late Rohit Raj Nepal and Malika Sharma. She is the daughter of Milan Raj Nepal and Anuradha Nepal, whose unwavering encouragement, understanding, and sacrifices have been the backbone of her success. From an early age, Kushalta displayed a keen interest in creativity and academics, supported wholeheartedly by her family who allowed her the independence to pursue her dreams.

Her academic achievements have consistently reflected her dedication and discipline. She completed her Class 10 from Holy Cross School, Tadong, with an impressive score of 81.8%. Continuing her pursuit of excellence, she secured 89.2% in her Class 12 examinations from Paljor Namgyal Girls School, Gangtok. These achievements laid a strong foundation for her future aspirations.

Kushalta’s determination reached a new height when she appeared for the highly competitive National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) All India Common Entrance Examination. Competing against thousands of aspirants from across the country, she secured an outstanding All India Merit Rank of 40 - an achievement that speaks volumes about her talent, focus, and hard work.

Currently, Kushalta is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at NIFT Delhi and is in her fourth semester. Her journey at one of India’s premier fashion institutes has further honed her creative skills and technical knowledge. Through dedication and consistent performance, she has stood out among her peers.

Her most significant achievement to date is her selection for a prestigious one-year international exchange programme at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York. After successfully clearing multiple rounds of rigorous selection process, her seat was officially confirmed on April 1, 2026. This opportunity will allow her to gain global exposure, interact with international designers, and experience the world of fashion at one of its most influential centers.

The Fashion Institute of Technology is globally recognized as one of the leading institutions for fashion education. Ranked among the top by CEO Magazine, FIT has been the alma mater of world-renowned designers such as Calvin Klein and Michael Kors. Kushalta’s selection into such a prestigious institution marks a significant milestone in her career and highlights her potential to make a mark on the international stage.

What makes her journey even more inspiring is her self-made approach. Throughout her academic life, Kushalta has not relied on any external coaching or specialized training. Instead, she depended entirely on her own efforts, utilizing books, school resources, and digital platforms to prepare herself. Her success is a testament to the power of self-discipline, determination, and effective use of available resources.

Despite achieving such remarkable milestones, Kushalta remains grounded and deeply connected to her roots. She expresses heartfelt gratitude to her parents for their unconditional support - both moral and physical - which enabled her to pursue her dreams without hesitation. She also acknowledges the role of her home state, Sikkim, in shaping her journey.

Kushalta credits the peaceful environment, political stability, and progressive governance of Sikkim for providing a nurturing space for young talents to grow. She specifically expresses her appreciation for the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), whose governance has fostered an atmosphere of development, motivation, and opportunity for the youth of the State.

Her story is not just about personal success but also about inspiration. Kushalta Nepal represents the aspirations of countless young students from small towns who dare to dream big. Her journey sends a powerful message - that with determination, clarity of vision, and the right support system, it is possible to overcome limitations and achieve excellence on a global platform.

As she prepares to step into the international arena of fashion in New York, Kushalta carries with her the hopes and pride of Sikkim. Her journey from the quiet hills of Tumin to the bustling streets of New York is a shining example of how dedication and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
