General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup football tournament underway in high-altitude Thegu

GANGTOK,: The General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup is currently underway at the breathtaking Thegu football ground, perched at an extraordinary altitude of 12,600 feet above sea level in East Sikkim.

Organized under the aegis of Indian Army, this prestigious tournament serves as a sporting tribute to the legendary Lt General Sagat Singh, who commanded the 17 Mountain Division and played a pivotal role in defending India during the historic Nathu La and Cho La clashes against Chinese forces in 1967, a press release informs.

Since its commencement on July 28, the tournament has generated tremendous excitement among local communities. The opening ceremony was commemorated by Gnathang-Machong MLA Pamin Lepcha following which a vibrant cultural programme showcased Sikkimese culture, heritage, and patriotism, providing a colorful backdrop that celebrated the region’s rich traditions alongside its sporting spirit.

The unique high-altitude venue adds an extra dimension of challenge for participating teams, making every match a test of both skill and endurance in the thin mountain air.

The tournament’s opening week has been a goal-fest filled with spectacular moments. NMFC Gangtok edged past Kyongnosla Club 1-0 on the opening day, while SSFC defeated Sinolchu Sangh FC 03-00.

Notable performances included Everest Boys’ commanding 2-0 victory over Ranjeet Boys and Balor Boys’ impressive 03-00 triumph against 15th Mile (A).

A team of 3rd Battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles showcased their prowess with a 4-0 rout of Changgu B, while Sherathang PS secured a 4-1 win over Zuluk Boys, the release mentions.

The week’s most memorable moment came when 7th Mile team delivered an absolutely stunning 11-0 victory over 11 Mile team, a scoreline that sent shockwaves through the tournament. Meanwhile, Sikkim Yetis kept their championship dreams alive by defeating Brotherhood 04-02 in a nail-biting penalty shootout. On August 4, Mr Veteran triumphed over 29-Kabi by a score of 8-1 while the 11th Mile Taxi Driver had close bout with the Dawa Boys winning by a score of 03-02.

The tournament continues to build momentum as it heads toward its climactic conclusion. The grand finale is scheduled for August 15, coinciding with India's Independence Day celebrations, adding patriotic fervour to the sporting spectacle.

Adding significant star power to the event, renowned national footballer Bikash Jairu from Sikkim will attend as chief guest on August 13, bringing prestige and excitement to the tournament. His presence is expected to inspire young players and elevate the profile of football even more in the region.
