GANGTOK,: The General Sagat Singh High Altitude Football Tournament will begin Wednesday at Thegu Ground with an opening ceremony to be officiated by the commander of the 63 Mountain Brigade.

The inaugural match of the General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup will see United Kupup taking on Senalchu Sang Club.

Held at an altitude of about 12,600 feet, the tournament commemorates the legacy of Lt Gen Sagat Singh, one of the Indian Army’s most celebrated military leaders, informs a press release. “He played a decisive role during the 1967 India-China clashes at Nathu La and Cho La in Sikkim, leading the 17 Mountain Division with exceptional courage and tactical brilliance.”

The tournament aims to honour his memory while inspiring young people to embrace the values of leadership, courage, discipline, and selfless service. Organisers said the event is not only a sporting competition but also an educational and motivational initiative that keeps alive the ideals of dedication, sacrifice, and excellence embodied by General Sagat Singh.

Set against the backdrop of the Himalayan frontier, the high-altitude tournament brings together the Indian Army, local communities, and football enthusiasts, celebrating sporting excellence and Sikkim’s rich military heritage.
