GANGTOK,:
The General Sagat Singh High Altitude Football Tournament will begin Wednesday
at Thegu Ground with an opening ceremony to be officiated by the commander of
the 63 Mountain Brigade.
The
inaugural match of the General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup will see United Kupup
taking on Senalchu Sang Club.
Held
at an altitude of about 12,600 feet, the tournament commemorates the legacy of
Lt Gen Sagat Singh, one of the Indian Army’s most celebrated military leaders,
informs a press release. “He played a decisive role during the 1967 India-China
clashes at Nathu La and Cho La in Sikkim, leading the 17 Mountain Division with
exceptional courage and tactical brilliance.”
The
tournament aims to honour his memory while inspiring young people to embrace
the values of leadership, courage, discipline, and selfless service. Organisers
said the event is not only a sporting competition but also an educational and
motivational initiative that keeps alive the ideals of dedication, sacrifice,
and excellence embodied by General Sagat Singh.
Set
against the backdrop of the Himalayan frontier, the high-altitude tournament
brings together the Indian Army, local communities, and football enthusiasts, celebrating
sporting excellence and Sikkim’s rich military heritage.
