Governor reaffirms commitment to Sikkim’s development and national vision

GANGTOK, : Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur has expressed confidence that the immense potential of the Sikkimese people will play a crucial role in realising the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

“The Sikkimese people are among the most forward-thinking citizens in the nation. Their immense potential will undoubtedly play a key role in realising the dream of Viksit Bharat @2047. Together, I am confident that we will elevate Sikkim into a model State for the entire country - excelling in governance, innovation, sustainability, and human development,” said the Governor.

Mathur was sharing his message to the people of Sikkim upon completion of his one year in the office as the Governor of Sikkim on July 31. He described the journey as “deeply enriching and transformative”.

It feels as if it was only yesterday that I took the oath of office at Raj Bhavan as the 18th Governor of Sikkim, yet the journey of the past year has been deeply enriching and transformative, said the Governor.

Mathur took oath as the 18th Governor of Sikkim on July 31, 2024.

“I consider myself truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve the people of Sikkim - people known for their humility, hospitality, compassion, and unwavering commitment to peace. In the course of this year, I have travelled across the length and breadth of the State - from the far reaches of Donkela Pass to the vibrant Maghey Mela in Jorethang - connecting with citizens, understanding their hopes and challenges, and drawing inspiration from their warmth and sincerity,” said the Governor in his message.

Mathur expressed that perhaps a karmic connection brought him to this divine land during a historic milestone, the Golden Jubilee celebration of Sikkim’s Statehood.

Reflecting on milestones, Governor Mathur highlighted the flagging-off of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra at Nathu La, and the inauguration of Prerna Sthal at Bardang - a memorial to the brave souls lost during the October 2023 flash floods.I was also privileged to be part of several landmark celebrations, including sacred Pang Lhabsol at the Tsuklakhang Palace, which beautifully reflects the spirit of unity and cultural reverence in Sikkim, he said.

“Among the many moments of fulfilment, I recall with particular pride the successful efforts to bring electricity to the remote village of Dichu village near the Doklam forward post, reaffirming our commitment to inclusive development. Equally memorable was my visit to the border villages under the Vibrant Villages Programme, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of turning the last villages of India into the first in development and opportunity.”

The Governor remarked that the women of Sikkim are truly empowered - not in name alone, but in action and spirit. They have excelled in every field, from governance and education to entrepreneurship and social service, and stand tall as torchbearers of women's empowerment in the country, he said.

“Equally commendable is the discipline observed on Sikkim’s roads. The adherence to traffic rules by both drivers and pedestrians sets an example for the rest of the country. Though we are a small State in size, we are an example of civic responsibility.”

The Governor recorded that Sikkim’s commitment to cleanliness is yet another shining benchmark. From urban centres to remote villages, Sikkim’s collective sense of environmental responsibility reflects the deep-rooted values of harmony with nature, he said, adding that it is no surprise that Sikkim is often recognised as one of the cleanest and greenest States in India.

In his message, the Governor extended his deepest appreciation to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay and his cabinet colleagues, whose commitment to the welfare of the people has greatly strengthened their collective efforts.

“As I reflect on this year of service, I remain inspired by the unity in diversity that defines Sikkim. I look forward to continuing this journey with renewed commitment and dedication,” said the Governor.
