Abstract:
Hearing loss is a common clinical
condition with multifactorial etiology, often requiring long-term management.
Conventional treatments may provide limited or temporary relief in certain
chronic or refractory cases. This case series presents three patients with
different types of hearing impairment—chronic suppurative otitis media,
presumed drug-induced auditory damage, and age-related hearing loss—successfully
managed with homoeopathic remedies. Individualized prescriptions, primarily
involving Mephitis along with supportive remedies, resulted in significant to
complete recovery without relapse during follow-up. These cases suggest the
potential role of homoeopathy in managing selected cases of hearing loss.

Introduction
Hearing loss can arise from
infections, ototoxicity, aging, or neurological damage. Conventional management
includes antibiotics, hearing aids, or surgical interventions, depending on the
cause. However, chronic and recurrent cases often pose therapeutic challenges.
Homoeopathy, with its individualized approach, may offer an alternative in such
cases. This report presents three cases demonstrating favourable outcomes with
homoeopathic treatment.
Case Presentations
Case 1: Chronic Suppurative Ear
Disease in a Child
A 10-year-old girl presented with
chronic ear discharge, hearing loss, and tinnitus. The discharge was offensive
in odour, leading to social embarrassment and withdrawal from school. She had a
history of repeated antibiotic use, which provided only temporary relief, with
recurrence occurring within two weeks.
Treatment:
Bacillinum 200, once weekly
Silicea 6X, three times daily
Mephitis 200, twice daily
Outcome:
Within one month, the ear discharge
ceased completely, and tinnitus improved significantly. Treatment was continued
for another month to consolidate recovery. At the end of treatment, hearing was
restored, and the patient resumed school. Follow-up over one year showed no
recurrence.
Case 2: Sudden Hearing Loss Following
Medical Treatment
A 65-year-old male tea garden manager
developed sudden, complete hearing loss after undergoing treatment for a
urinary tract infection. Multiple ENT consultations suggested irreversible
auditory nerve damage and offered no further treatment options.
Treatment:
Mephitis 200, three times daily
Outcome:
Gradual improvement was noted over
several weeks. Complete restoration of hearing occurred within two months. The
patient returned to his professional duties and reported no residual
impairment.
Case 3: Age-Related Hearing Loss
An 80-year-old male with
long-standing hearing impairment presented with severe hearing loss. He had
been using hearing aids with minimal benefit.
Initial Treatment:
Mephitis 30, three times daily
After one month, partial improvement
was observed.
Revised Treatment:
Mephitis 200, three times daily
Natrum Sulph 12X, three times daily
Outcome:
Significant improvement occurred over
the next two months, culminating in complete restoration of hearing. The
patient reported the ability to perceive subtle sounds such as bird chirping.
Total duration of treatment was three months.
Discussion
This case series highlights the
potential utility of homoeopathic medicines in managing diverse presentations
of hearing loss. In all three cases, Mephitis was the principal remedy,
selected based on symptom similarity and clinical judgment.
Case 1 demonstrated effective
management of chronic suppurative ear disease with recurrent infection. The
addition of Bacillinum and Silicea likely supported resolution of chronic
infection and improved tissue response.
Case 2 is notable for recovery from
presumed irreversible auditory damage. While spontaneous recovery cannot be
entirely excluded, though chances were minimal, the temporal association with
homoeopathic treatment suggests a possible therapeutic effect.
Case 3 illustrates improvement in
age-related hearing decline, a condition typically considered progressive and
irreversible. Adjustment of potency and addition of Natrum Sulph appeared to
enhance the therapeutic outcome.
These cases underscore the importance
of individualized treatment and potency selection in homoeopathy. The
consistent use of Mephitis across different etiologies suggests its potential
role in auditory disorders, though further systematic study is required.
Limitations
Small sample size (three cases)
Lack of objective audiometric data
after recovery
Absence of control or comparison
group
Possibility of spontaneous recovery
in some cases, but chances were minimal
Conclusion
The presented cases suggest that
homoeopathic treatment may offer benefit in certain cases of hearing loss,
including chronic infection, drug-induced impairment, and age-related decline.
Further controlled studies with larger sample sizes and objective outcome
measures are needed to validate these findings, though in many other similar
cases use of Mephitis and Natrum Sulph produced equally effective result.
