Indra Hang meets BRO DG, discuss alternative highway alignment to North Sikkim

GANGTOK,: Lok Sabha MP (Sikkim) Indra Hang Subba held a meeting with the BRO director general in New Delhi to deliberate on critical infrastructure development in the State, particularly the proposed alternative highway alignment to North Sikkim.

During the meeting, the Lok Sabha MP highlighted the strategic and economic importance of developing an alternative highway to ensure all-weather connectivity to the northern districts of Sikkim, a press release on Tuesday informs.

He apprised the BRO director general of the pressing need to expedite the planning and execution of the new highway, emphasizing that the region’s proximity to international borders makes improved road infrastructure a matter of national security.

Indra Hang also underscored that the existing route to North Sikkim is frequently disrupted due to landslides and adverse weather conditions, affecting both civilian movement and the deployment of essential services. The new alignment, he noted, would not only enhance border accessibility but also boost local livelihoods and strengthen the overall economic resilience of the State.

The BRO director general assured that the matter would receive due consideration, adding that necessary studies and consultations will be initiated to identify the most feasible alignment.

Indra Hang reiterated his commitment to pursuing infrastructure projects that balance strategic imperatives with the socio-economic aspirations of the people of Sikkim, the release mentions.
