Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai’s elevation as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as reported in your esteemed daily, is truly a feather in the cap for the entire Northeast. At a time when women are still fighting an uphill battle for greater representation in higher institutions, her achievement shines like a beacon of hope and inspiration. The Northeast has often remained on the margins when it comes to representation in national institutions. Hence, moments like these are not merely appointments; they become matters of collective pride. Earlier, Justice Ranjan Gogoi made history as the first Chief Justice of India from the Northeast in 2018. Now, Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai has opened another historic chapter by becoming the first woman from the Northeast to be elevated as Chief Justice of a major High Court outside the region. Her recommendation for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 22, 2026, which was officially made public on May 23, 2026, has brought immense pride not only to Sikkim but to the entire Northeast.

Her journey reminds us that where there is determination, there is always a way. Rising through years of dedicated judicial service with dignity and integrity, she has proved that hard work eventually speaks louder than barriers of geography or gender. The history of women in India’s judiciary itself has not been an easy road. Justice Leila Seth became the first woman Chief Justice of a State High Court only in 1991, while Justice M. Fathima Beevi broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first woman judge of the Supreme Court. Even today, women heading High Courts are few and far between. That is why Justice Rai’s achievement carries such deep meaning. When women and people from underrepresented regions find their rightful place in leadership, justice becomes not only stronger but also more compassionate and inclusive. After all, talent knows no boundaries, and excellence can bloom even in the farthest corners of the country.
