GANGTOK,: A 27-year-old woman and her two minor sons lost their lives when their kutcha house was swept away by a landslide in early morning hours of Tuesday at Dokan Dara, Rongyeck, near Gangtok.
Intense rains had triggered the landslide leading to the deaths of Doma Sherpa and her two children. One was aged 8 years old and the other was a seven-month infant. The incident took place around 1:25 am.
Gangtok SDM (headquarters) Robin Sewa, SDRF rescue team, firemen and Sikkim Police personnel rushed to the spot immediately upon receiving the information. The SDRF rescue team led by head constable Narendra Rai along with the help of the local panchayats and residents sprung into the search operation and recovered the bodies.
The deceased’s husband, Bimal Mangar, is a driver by profession and was at Siliguri when the calamity struck his family. He reached Gangtok later in the day and took the bodies of his family to his native village of Suldung Boudha, West Sikkim from STNM Hospital here.
SDM Sewa assured to address the calamity seriously and provide all the necessary assistance to the bereaved family as per the norms of the State government.
Governor Ganga Prasad has expressed deep grief over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. “In this time of grief and sorrow I convey my deepest sympathy to the bereaved family members and pray that the Almighty God will grant comfort and solace. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” he said.
