GANGTOK, : LokSabha MP (Sikkim) Indra Hang Subbamet the Minister of State for
Textiles, PabitraMargherita, at his residence and submitted a formal
representation seeking the establishment of a National Institute of Fashion
Technology (NIFT) in the State of Sikkim.
During
the meeting, the LokSabha MP highlighted Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage in
art, design, and indigenous handloom traditions. He pointed out that due to the
State’s small geographical size and fragile ecology, Sikkim is not conducive to

proposed NIFT campus would play a key role in skill development for local
youth, modernisation of traditional handloom practices, and creation of
sustainable livelihood opportunities. It would also help preserve and promote
Sikkim’s unique textile heritage while connecting local talent to national and
global markets.
Indra
Hang also emphasised Sikkim’s strategic importance as a peaceful border State
and stressed the need for inclusive, forward-looking educational institutions
to strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the state.

Minister of State for Textiles gave a patient hearing to the submission, the
