DARJEELING, : Forty-year-old KailashThapa was on Wednesday sentenced to
rigorous life imprisonment by a trial court here for burninghis seventy-two-year
old mother demanding money from her.
The
incident which took place at Takdah cantonment underRangli-Rangliot Police
Station dates back to 26th November 2024.

PP PranoyRai said, “Kailash was an alcoholic andfrequently made a demand for
cash and when his demand was not met, heused to retaliate violently. Making a
similar demand he pouredkerosene over his mother Neeta Thapa and burned her
alive. For this hewas today pronounced a sentence of rigorous life imprisonment
for themurder of his mother by the District and Sessions Judge court.”
According
to Rai, just three months before the incident that same yearin August he had
beaten his father who suffers from paralysis alongwith fracturing the hand of
his mother who had to be hospitalized.That time too he had demanded money from
her.
“During
that incident, the villagers seeing this had complained to thepolice and he was
arrested. However, the love of a mother towards hisson was such that he was
taken out on bail by her. However,
afterthree months the same type of incident occurred but this time she wasburnt
by the son,” said Rai who added that Kailash was immediatelyarrested again and
was in the Darjeeling correction home.
Speaking
about the incident further the Darjeeling PP said that themother after being
burned was hurriedly taken to the Takdah PrimaryHealth Centre and due to
certain treatment limitations there, she wastaken to a nursing home at Siliguri
and then again shifted to a healthcenter at Rangapani.
“After
eight days she succumbed to her injuries on 4th December thatyear. She had
sustained 55 % burn injuries. A forensic examination wasalso conducted along
with a post-mortem investigation done on her,”said Rai.
