Monsoon Travel Tips You Shouldn't Skip

Shahnaz Husain

Monsoon in India isn't just a season—it's a feeling. Mist-covered hills, roaring waterfalls and the scent of rain-soaked earth create unforgettable memories. The rains transform familiar places into lush landscapes, making them perfect for romantic getaways and refreshing escapes.

Travelling during the monsoon can be magical. Nature has a way of slowing life down, allowing you to simply soak in its beauty. Whether it's a rainforest, a beach town or a hill station, the season offers breathtaking experiences.

However, monsoon travel also brings challenges. Heavy rain, slippery roads and fluctuating temperatures can affect both your journey and your skin. High humidity often leaves the skin oily, irritated and prone to infections. A little preparation can make your trip safe and enjoyable.

Eat Healthy

Vacations often tempt us to indulge, but healthy eating is especially important during the monsoon.

Choose freshly cooked, steaming-hot food, peelable fruits and safe drinking water. Avoid raw vegetables, street food, tap water and drinks with ice.

At buffets, ensure hot food is piping hot and cold food is properly chilled. Eat fruits only after washing them with bottled water or peeling them yourself.

Sealed bottled or canned beverages, sparkling water, and steaming-hot tea or coffee are generally safe. Avoid beverages served lukewarm or at room temperature.

Use Waterproof Sunscreen

Cloudy skies do not block harmful UV rays. In fact, clouds can scatter UV radiation, increasing exposure.

Choose a lightweight, gel-based, water-resistant sunscreen that won't clog pores or feel greasy. Reapply every three hours, and after excessive sweating, swimming or prolonged outdoor exposure.

Keep Makeup Minimal

Humidity can cause heavy makeup to melt and clog pores.

Keep your routine simple. Use a gel-based moisturiser and lightweight serum with hyaluronic acid. Replace heavy foundation with a BB or CC cream, and use a hydrating concealer only where needed for a fresh, natural look.

Prevent Fungal Infections

Walking through puddles may be fun, but damp conditions encourage fungal infections. Constant moisture promotes the growth of bacteria and fungi, leading to itching, swelling and unpleasant odour.

Use lotion-based moisturisers instead of heavy creams. Virgin coconut oil has natural antifungal properties and can soothe affected skin.

Neem is another effective natural remedy. Wash the affected area with cooled neem water made by boiling neem leaves. Neem oil can also be applied with a cotton swab for about 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

For fungal infections on the feet or nails, apply a paste made from powdered neem leaves, sandalwood powder and rose water.

Pack Your Rainy-Day Essentials

Carry a raincoat or poncho for sudden showers. Waterproof shoes with good grip are essential for comfort and safety on slippery roads. Always try footwear before buying to ensure a proper fit.

Invest in waterproof, breathable socks to keep your feet dry and protected.

Carry a small handkerchief lightly scented with your favourite fragrance for a refreshing touch throughout the day.

Finally, create a playlist that matches the mood of the rains. Sometimes the best part of a monsoon journey is simply listening to the rain as the world passes by.
