Online Gaming and the Cost of Escape

PRATIMA SHARMA

How many of us remember waiting for our turns to play the Snake Game, Diamond Rush, on a keypad mobile back then? The excitement, the happiness, and simply something that we enjoyed a lot without any expectations.

While I see today, most people are immersed in online gaming, with bets leading to losses as well as wins, and above all, there is a change in how we function. Addiction does not always begin with destruction, sometimes it begins with relief. I'm sure, for you as well, it started as fun, with one chance, a second chance, and then the spiral didn't break. I don't know if you agree, but online gaming is emotionally consuming.

Life is a roller coaster for each one of us, with a mixture of stress, loneliness, pressure, boredom, and emotional escape, and what we do is, instead of sitting with how we feel, we avoid our inner voice and get addicted to escaping reality because we get a sense of control, achievement, and digital validation.

We ignore our environment, we withdraw from social interaction, and our thoughts are wired only to the game, making us irritable and aggressive, leading to problems in every sphere of life. Our brain starts craving stimulation repeatedly, and we are in love with chasing the feeling of rewards, winning, near misses, suspense, and “one more game.”

And the more we lose, the harder it becomes to stop. People start playing online games, spending small amounts initially, and with certain rewards, invest more and find themselves in a space trying to recover losses, with false hope of winning back and impulsive spending. The investment is more emotional.

When someone spends their entire time gaming, there arises irritability, aggression, withdrawal, staying awake late, avoiding responsibilities, emotional instability, and lying about money or the time spent using mobile phones. These are the warning signs that make us understand that it's affecting us.

Sometimes people are not losing only money, but sleep, peace, relationships, and parts of themselves. People start neglecting reality, with emotional distance in family setups, poor academic and work performance, and mostly being disturbed by someone trying to reach out.

What feels like temporary relief gradually turns into dependency, affecting sleep, emotions, relationships, concentration, and financial stability. But it is important to understand that help is available. Speaking openly, setting boundaries with screen time, reconnecting with real-life activities, and seeking professional support when needed can slowly help an individual regain balance before things go too far.

Let me tell you this, real life may not give us instant rewards the way games do, but it is still the place where genuine connection, peace, and growth exist. The harm lies in when virtual victories start replacing real emotions, real relationships, and real responsibilities. And honestly, somewhere between the wins and losses, people are not just losing money, but slowly losing touch with themselves. So it's time to take a step back and analyse where we stand.
