Poddar takes interim charge as VC of Darjeeling Hills University

SILIGURI,: Kalimpong-born professor PremPoddar has once again been appointed as Vice Chancellor (VC) of Darjeeling Hills University. The interim appointment is for three months.

Poddar will take the charge of the post from Friday morning. On Thursday, he met Om Prakash Mishra, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of North Bengal University at the university office.

Poddar will also meet Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) chairman AnitThapa before resuming his office at Mangpoo.

Speaking with media persons at NBU,Poddar said, “There are lots of things to do, I have to take the charge of history, look into the files. This university has been taking care by Subires Bhattacharya and Om Prakash Mishra earlier. It has been very fluctuating, temporarily, transitory kind of situation now and I am also in that kind of situation as I have been in a post for only three months. Let’s see, we will look at the priorities what can be done, if I am allowed to, I would like to do lots of things. We don’t have the blueprint right now, the campus has to be develop a lot.”

Poddar was a professor in Cultural Encounters at Rosklide University in Denmark. He has been a Humboldt Senior Fellow, AHRC Fellow at Southampton and Carlsberg Fellow at Cambridge University. He has taught in India, Britain, and Denmark as Associate Professor in Postcolonial Studies. He is the author of many articles and books including Violent Civilities (2002) and Postkolonial Contra-modernitet: Immigration, Identitet, Historie (2004).

Darjeeling Hills University is a public State university in Mangpoo and the university was established in 2021 under The Greenfield University Act, 2018.
