Pop-up rain gun sprinkler irrigation system inaugurated at Sikkim Cricket Ground

GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Cricket Ground at Rangpo now boasts of a state-of-the-art Automatic Pop-Up Rain Gun Sprinkler Irrigation System.

The new irrigation system was officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay in the esteemed presence of Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder, cabinet ministers, MLAs, senior government officials and members of Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) on Sunday.

The Automatic Pop-Up Rain Gun Sprinkler Irrigation System is part of SICA’s ongoing efforts to upgrade facilities at the Sikkim Cricket Ground, aiming to enhance ground management and ensure efficient water usage. A total of 16 pop-up sprinklers have been installed, allowing for effective irrigation without affecting the playing surface, a SICA press release informs.

These advanced sprinklers are permanently embedded underground and connected to a water supply system. Once activated, they water designated areas and retract back into the ground, leaving no visible obstacles on the field.

The system includes six small sprinklers positioned around the pitch area and ten large sprinklers installed along the outer perimeter of the ground. Two control stations manage the system automatically, ensuring complete coverage of both high-use zones near the pitch and larger outfield areas.

An exhibition match between CM XI, led by the Chief Minister, and CJ XI, captained by the Chief Justice, added a celebratory note to the occasion, showcasing camaraderie between the executive and judiciary, the release mentions.

Speaking on the occasion, SICA president Tika Subba said: “This system is a great step forward for Sikkim cricket. It makes ground maintenance easier and more efficient. We are thankful to the Chief Minister for inaugurating the facility and supporting our efforts.”

Also known as Mining Ground, Sikkim Cricket Ground is the official home ground of Sikkim Cricket Association. Since its upgrade to a first-class venue in 2022, with the support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the ground has since hosted Ranji Trophy matches and other national competitions. In May 2025, floodlights were also inaugurated at the ground, enabling day-night matches and extended practice sessions.

SICA is headquartered at Sikkim Cricket Ground, Rangpo.
