Post-Traumatic Neurological Symptoms and their management

Dr. P.K. CHHETRI

Abstract

This observational report presents a series of patients with chronic neurological symptoms developing after head trauma, including migraine, tremor, handwriting difficulty, and Parkinsonian manifestations, who reportedly improved following individualized homeopathic treatment. The author’s own case is described first, followed by additional observational cases monitored over several years. The remedies employed included Cicuta virosa, Magnesia phosphorica, Causticum, Rhus toxicodendron, and Natrum sulphuricum. Sustained symptomatic improvement was reportedly observed in tremor, headache, handwriting impairment, and functional capacity. The report discusses a possible relationship between remote head trauma and delayed neurological symptoms, while acknowledging the need for controlled scientific investigation.

Introduction

Neurological complications following head trauma may emerge immediately or after a prolonged latency period. Repetitive or severe cranial injury has been associated with chronic headache syndromes, tremor disorders, Parkinsonism, and neurodegenerative changes. Conventional neurological imaging may remain normal despite persistent symptoms.

Post-traumatic migraine and trauma-associated Parkinsonian symptoms have been documented in medical literature, especially among athletes exposed to repeated cranial injury such as boxers. Muhammad Ali remains one of the most widely discussed examples of trauma-associated Parkinsonism.

This report describes several observational cases in which homeopathic treatment was followed by long-term symptomatic improvement in patients presenting with delayed neurological manifestations after head trauma.

Author’s Personal Case

Approximately fifteen years after sustaining severe trauma to the head while climbing onto a jeep, the author developed progressive left-sided migraine headaches. Initial injury produced intermittent pain only, and no acute neurological deficit was recognized.

Over subsequent years, symptoms worsened and included:

severe unilateral migraine,

impaired work capacity,

tremor of the hands,

deterioration of handwriting,

difficulty signing documents,

progressive Parkinsonian manifestations.

Three CT scans of the brain, including one contrast-enhanced study, reportedly showed no significant abnormality. Multiple neurological consultations resulted primarily in analgesic prescriptions without substantial relief.

Various homeopathic remedies were attempted over time, including:

Arnica montana, Belladonna,Glonoine.

These remedies reportedly produced little improvement.

Subsequently, the following treatment regimen was used:

Magnesia phosphorica 1M,Causticum 1M,Rhus toxicodendron 3X,Temulentum 200.

Parkinsonian symptoms gradually improved during approximately one year of treatment, with reduction of tremor and restoration of handwriting stability. However, severe migraine persisted. A trial of Cicuta virosa 200 yielded limited improvement, after which a single dose of Cicuta virosa CM was administered. Following this intervention, the migraine reportedly resolved completely.

To prevent recurrence and mitigate presumed long-term effects of cranial trauma, Natrum sulphuricum 12X was continued at a dosage of four tablets three times daily for approximately three years. The author reports sustained absence of tremor, migraine, and handwriting impairment thereafter.

Additional Observational Cases

Case 1

A male child in the United States reportedly sustained severe head trauma while playing. Following the injury, he developed:

persistent headache,

continuous shaking of the head,

handwriting difficulty.

The following homeopathic regimen was prescribed:

Cicuta virosa 50M, two doses,

Natrum sulphuricum 12X, four tablets three times daily for one year,

Magnesia phosphorica 1M, one dose daily for six months.

After one year, maintenance treatment with Natrum sulphuricum 12X once daily in the morning was advised.

The author reports that approximately twenty years after treatment, the patient remained free from migraine and Parkinsonian symptoms.

Additional Cases

The author subsequently managed several additional patients with histories of head trauma followed by delayed neurological manifestations, including:

tremor,migraine,handwriting difficulty,Parkinsonian symptoms.

The most frequently used remedies included:

Magnesia phosphorica 1M,

Cicuta virosa 50M,

Rhus toxicodendron 3X,

maintenance Natrum sulphuricum 12X.

Patients were reportedly monitored for periods extending up to ten years, during which no recurrence of major neurological symptoms was observed according to the author’s records and follow-up communication.

Discussion

Head trauma has long been associated with chronic neurological sequelae. Repetitive traumatic brain injury has been linked with:

chronic traumatic encephalopathy,

post-traumatic headache,

tremor disorders,

trauma-associated Parkinsonism.

The mechanism may involve progressive neuro-inflammation, axonal injury, or delayed degeneration of dopaminergic pathways.

The cases described in this report suggest a possible association between individualized homeopathic intervention and long-term symptomatic improvement in patients with post-traumatic neurological syndromes. Particular emphasis is placed on the apparent utility of:

Cicuta virosa for severe post-traumatic migraine,

Magnesia phosphorica and Causticum for tremor and Parkinsonian manifestations,

Natrum sulphuricum as long-term maintenance following cranial trauma.

However, several important limitations must be acknowledged:

The report is retrospective and observational.

Objective neurological scoring systems were not consistently employed.

Diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease versus secondary Parkinsonism were not formally differentiated in all cases.

Spontaneous fluctuation of symptoms cannot be excluded.

Placebo response and natural recovery remain possible confounding factors.

Neuro-imaging beyond CT scanning was limited.

Despite these limitations, the prolonged follow-up and repeated observation of similar symptom patterns after head trauma may justify further systematic investigation.

Conclusion

This observational case series describes several patients with delayed neurological manifestations after head trauma who reportedly experienced substantial long-term symptomatic improvement following homeopathic treatment.

The observations particularly suggest possible areas for future research involving:

post-traumatic migraine,

trauma-associated tremor,

secondary Parkinsonian syndromes,

long-term neurological consequences of head injury.

Controlled prospective studies with standardized neurological assessment and imaging would be necessary to evaluate these observations scientifically and determine whether the reported therapeutic effects exceed placebo or natural recovery.
