QR-based real-time waste complaint system launched in Dzongu

GANGTOK,: The Passingdang block administrative centre has introduced a QR-code-based complaint system aimed at real-time waste monitoring.

The initiative was launched today by Forest and Environment minister and area MLA Pintso Namgyal Lepcha by unveiling a signage with the QR code at Sangakalang entry gate.

According to a press release issued by the BAC, QR codes have been installed across critical nodes, including arterial roadsides, tourist destinations and other public utility places.

Through these QR codes, local citizens and visitors can directly report littering and environmental pollution. They can scan the QR code or access the WhatsApp link and upload photographs of littered areas, share the location and submit short details regarding the waste. Complaints can be lodged against plastic waste, cloth and fabric waste, glass bottles, food waste and other forms of litter.

The complaints received would be promptly reviewed and actions taken to resolve them within the stipulated time. “A protocol for prompt action ensures that Plastic Waste Management Unit teams and concerned Gram Panchayats address reported issues within 24 hours.”

A monitoring dashboard at Passingdang BAC tracks every grievance from inception to resolution, ensuring a closed-loop accountability system, officials said.

This initiative, the BAC said, marks a pivotal evolution in the region’s waste management paradigm, transitioning from traditional collection models to a dynamic, community-driven ecosystem.

Designed as a strategic extension of the Plastic Waste Management Unit, the project bolsters real-time surveillance, fosters localized accountability, and galvanizes public participation in preserving the pristine sanctity of the Dzongu landscape.

All non-residents and tourists entering Dzongu, a restricted, protected Lepcha reserve, are briefed on Dzongu’s strict “litter-free” protocol at primary checkpoints at Phidang (Lower Dzongu) and Sangkalang (Upper Dzongu).

In a parallel effort to promote conscientious tourism, visitors are also provided with a brochure detailing cultural landmarks, points of interest, and sustainable eco-tourism guidelines.
