GANGTOK,: Rajasthan United FC lifted the 41st Governor’s Gold Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Services XI in the final played at a packed Paljor Stadium on Saturday.

The lone goal of the match came early in the second half, when Joseph Lalvemhima smashed in an unstoppable shot. It was the first goal conceded by Services XI in the entire tournament.

Although the contest was evenly matched, Rajasthan United FC created more scoring opportunities but struggled with their finishing. Services XI also deserve credit for a resolute defensive display against a side that had scored nine goals in its previous three matches.

Services XI had a few chances of their own, particularly in the closing stages, but failed to convert. Their attacking strength took a blow after in-form striker Abhishek Pawar was forced off with an injury in the first half.

Chief Minister PS Golay, the chief guest for the final, handed over the winners’ and runners-up trophies to Rajasthan United FC and Services XI respectively in presence of organisers Sikkim Football Association (SFA).

It was a memorable debut for Rajasthan United FC in the Governor’s Gold Cup, as the I-League side was playing in Sikkim for the first time. It was also a dream-fulfilled moment for Sikkimese footballer Novin Gurung, an important member of the squad.

Novin, who hails from Rongli in East Sikkim and plays as a right back, said, “Since childhood I had this dream of winning the Governor’s Gold Cup and I am happy today to achieve this dream.” He also thanked the local crowd for their strong support to Rajasthan United FC.

Rajasthan United’s Pangambam Naoba Meitei was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ and was presented with a Royal Enfield motorcycle sponsored by Star Mall, Gangtok.

Chief Minister PS Golay congratulated Rajasthan United FC for winning the Governor’s Gold Cup.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister highlighted that the State government is focused on preparing the necessary infrastructure for the development of sports and sportspersons in Sikkim. “It is heartening to see our youth engaged in sports, and the government’s role is to provide them with good infrastructure,” he said.

Golay mentioned that sports stadiums are nearing completion in Geyzing and Mangan districts, while land is being scouted for a stadium in Pakyong district. Gangtok, Soreng and Namchi districts already have stadiums.

“Besides these stadiums, we are soon coming up with a massive three-ground sports complex, with one ground for practice, one with natural grass turf, and one with artificial turf. We aim to complete this cultural and sports complex in 2027–28 so that mega events accommodating up to one lakh people can be held,” said the Chief Minister.
