Request for Better Pink City Runner Timings Along the Gangtok-Ranipool Stretch

The introduction of the Pink City Runner, popularly known as the “Aama-Didi-Bahini Bus Sewa”, is indeed a commendable initiative by the Government of Sikkim. A transport service exclusively for women, operated by female drivers and conductors, reflects the State’s commitment towards women’s safety, empowerment and inclusive development. The subsidised fare system is also a thoughtful step that will benefit many daily commuters.

However, despite the good intentions behind the initiative, the present timings and frequency of the bus service are not practical for many women working in private firms and educational institutions, as well as for female college students residing along the Gangtok-Ranipool stretch, particularly in areas such as Deorali, Tadong, 5th Mile and 6th Mile.

Most colleges and universities are located between Tadong and Ranipool, employing a large number of women staff and catering to hundreds of female students. Unfortunately, during office and college hours in the morning, most Pink City Runner buses ply upwards from Ranipool towards Gangtok, while there are very limited services operating from Gangtok towards Ranipool between 8 am and 9 am. As a result, many intended beneficiaries are unable to avail themselves of the service.

This is a humble appeal to the concerned authorities to reconsider the schedule and ensure adequate Pink City Runner services from Gangtok to Ranipool during peak morning hours. The issue becomes even more pressing during the ongoing tourist season, when availability of local taxis becomes extremely difficult.

With better planning and balanced scheduling, this excellent initiative can truly serve the needs of all women commuters.
