GANGTOK,: The Centre has released Rs. 1,054.37 crores to Sikkim under Jal
Jeevan Mission over the last five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
“Over
the last five years (2020-21 to 2024-25), under Jal Jeevan Mission, an amount
of Rs. 1,054.37 crores was released to the State Government of Sikkim to
provide potable water through functional household tap connection to every
rural household in mission mode,” said Jal Shakti MoS Raj Bhusan Choudhary in a
written reply in Rajya Sabha on December 8.
Choudhary
was replying to a question from Rajya Sabha MP DT Lepcha.
The
Sikkim MP had sought to know whether the Centre proposes to provide any special
financial or technical assistance to small States like Sikkim through schemes
like Jal Jeevan Mission, Namami Gange Programme (for relevant tributaries),
flood management and river rejuvenation programmes.
In
his reply, the Jal Shakti MoS shared that under National River Conservation
Plan, an amount of Rs. 202 crores was released to the Sikkim government for
pollution-abatement works including sewage-treatment capacity creation. Under
Flood Management & Border Areas Programme, Rs. 91.84 crores was released to
the Sikkim government for flood control, anti-erosion and drainage development.
DT
Lepcha had also asked whether the Union government will consider creating a
separate policy for small and disaster-prone Himalayan States to ensure timely
completion and sustainability of water-related infrastructure projects.
In
his reply, the Jal Shakti MoS said the government implements various schemes
for small and disaster prone Himalayan States. These schemes are Pradhan Mantri
Krishi Sinchai Yojana, National River Conservation Plan, Flood Management and
Border Area Programme, and National Water Mission.
