GANGTOK, :
Sikkim Akademi will present a play titled “Balidan”, based on the life of Saheed
Durga Malla, the first Gorkha soldier from Indian National Army (INA) to
sacrifice his life for India's independence. The performance is scheduled for
December 15 at the auditorium of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College
(NBBGC) in Tadong.
Addressing
a press conference in the capital today, Sikkim Akademi president S.R. Subba
highlighted the immense contributions and sacrifices of Gorkhas in India’s
freedom struggle and their continued dedication to the development of the
nation.
“While
Gorkhas have served the nation in every sphere, the challenge of being
recognized as ‘Swadeshi’ citizens remains unresolved,” Subba said, adding that
the identity of the Gorkhas has often been questioned throughout history. He
said the play “Balidan” is crucial as it showcases the dedication and sacrifice
of Durga Malla, who gave his life for India's independence.
Subba
expressed that the play is a humble effort by Sikkim Akademi to preserve the
legacy of Gorkha forefathers and to help the audience understand their
struggles, challenges and sacrifices.
Director
and playwright C.L. Ghimirey expressed pride in staging “Balidan”. “Drama in
Sikkim began in the years 1923-24 and this year, we celebrate the centenary of
drama in Sikkim alongside the Statehood golden jubilee,” he said.
Ghimirey
described the play as a celebration of both the historical and cultural
significance of the Gorkha community's contribution to the freedom struggle. He
added that the play features around 25 actors and runs for an hour. He
expressed confidence that it would inspire and enlighten the audience.
The
press conference was attended by Sikkim Akademi general secretary Purna Yonzon
along with other executive members, as well as the associate director and chief
