Sikkim athletes win gold in Bangkok international taekwondo championship

GANGTOK, : Sikkim’s Taekwondo players Rabi Das and Harka Bahadur Rai, along with their coach and mentor Grand Master Trilok Subba, have brought pride to the State and the nation by winning a gold medal for India in the Senior Male Team Poomsae event at the 2nd Tirak and K.D.M International Taekwondo Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The championship took place from November 1 to 2, 2025, at the Central Bangna Auditorium, Central Plaza, Bangkok. The event witnessed participation from over 700 athletes representing countries such as South Korea, India, Malaysia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Singapore, among others, a press release informs.

Rabi Das, a 2nd Dan Black Belt, and Harka Bahadur Rai, a 4th Dan Black Belt, expressed their joy after the win, dedicating the achievement to their coach.

“This was our dream - to win an international Taekwondo medal. We began training under chief coach Trilok Subba back in 1988 at the Paljor Stadium Indoor Hall in Gangtok. We are deeply grateful to Grand Master Subba for his guidance and for preparing us from July this year for this championship,” they said.

Both players have an impressive record, having secured multiple gold medals in State and regional championships, and represented Sikkim in national competitions on more than three occasions. Earlier this year, in August and October 2025, they also clinched gold medals at the 2nd Kanchenjunga Cup Taekwondo Championship held in Kalimpong under the GTA.

Grand Master Trilok Subba (8th Dan Black Belt), who coached the team, expressed pride in his students’ accomplishments.

“Both Rabi and Harka are very dedicated, humble, and talented students. I am extremely happy and satisfied to see them win their first-ever international gold medal in their Taekwondo journey,” he said.
