GANGTOK,: The United Arm Wrestling Association of Sikkim is preparing to
participate in the 43rd National Arm Wrestling Championship, scheduled to be
held in Guwahati from July 30 to July 31.
Speaking
at a press conference in Gangtok on Tuesday, Ganesh Kumar Subba, president of
the United Arm Wrestling Association of Sikkim and general secretary of the Arm
Wrestling Federation of India, shared that Team Sikkim had an impressive
showing at the previous national championship, securing second place overall.
Notably, the women’s team emerged as the “Champion of Champions.”
This
year, the championship will be held in Guwahati, and we invite aspiring
athletes from across the State to register for participation, Subba said. He
noted that several arm wrestlers from Sikkim who competed in last year’s
nationals have already qualified, and many others are currently undergoing
intensive training.
To
broaden participation, the association has called on gym owners and coaches to
encourage their trainees to take part. A short crash course will be conducted
for interested aspirants prior to the final selection.
“The
championship will feature two categories - juniors (under 18 years) and
seniors. Within these, participants will be further grouped according to weight
classes,” Subba explained.
As
part of its ongoing efforts to promote the sport, the association also
announced plans to host an open arm wrestling championship at MG Marg in
October 2025.
Subba
urged interested athletes to submit their applications to the association
between July 15 and 20. The final team, expected to comprise 30 to 35 athletes,
is scheduled to depart for Guwahati by July 27.
The
press conference was also attended by executive members of the association along
with founding member Pema Dorjee Bhutia.
