GANGTOK, : Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba represented Sikkim and the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha at an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Parliament Annex Building in New Delhi today.
During the meeting, Subba made several demands. He emphasized that even the smallest parties should be allotted enough time, at least 10 minutes at a time, to speak in Parliament, informs a press release.
He also proposed that Parliament hold extensive discussions on climate change and immediate mitigation programs. He stressed that attention-calling motions in Parliament should be considered for smaller parties as well.
The meeting was also attended by Kiren Rijiju, Union minister of Parliamentary Affairs, and J.P. Nadda, Union minister for Health and Family Welfare.
In the afternoon, Subba met with Pabitra Margarita, the Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles. He submitted an application requesting support for reviving Sikkim’s traditional and indigenous textiles and craftsmanship. He highlighted the bamboo crafts of the Lepchas, which were highly praised by J.C. White, the first British Political Officer to Sikkim. Subba also mentioned Jorden Lepcha, Sikkim’s renowned bamboo hat maker, who was awarded the Padma Shri this year.

In his application, Subba emphasized the rich tradition of creating beautiful textiles, ornaments and decorative items in Sikkim society. “The skills and artistry involved in these crafts have been passed down through generations and are an integral part of the cultural identity. To ensure these traditional crafts thrive and continue to benefit the community, support and resources for their revival and preservation are needed,” the release adds.
“Today's discussions and meetings were crucial steps toward ensuring that the voices of Sikkim and its smaller parties are heard in Parliament. By addressing the pressing issues of climate change, flood recovery and the preservation of traditional crafts, a brighter and more sustainable future for the community is sought. The support and cooperation of government representatives are vital in achieving these goals, and Indra Hang Subba remains committed to advocating for the needs and aspirations of the people of Sikkim,” the release issued by his office states.
