GANGTOK, (IPR):
The 135th birth anniversary of Bharat RatnaDr. B.R. Ambedkar was commemorated in
the premises of Sikkim Legislative Assembly today. The programme was organised
by State Social Welfare department in coordination with All Sikkim Scheduled
Caste Welfare Association (ASSCWA).
The programme was attended by GovernorOm Prakash
Mathuras the chief guest and Chief MinisterPrem Singh Tamang as the guest of
honour.
In his address, the Governor paid tributes to Dr.
Ambedkar, highlighting his immense contributions as the principal architect of
the Constitution and a champion of social justice. He emphasised that Dr
Ambedkar envisioned a society founded on equality, dignity, and justice, and
underscored that true democracy rests on social and economic justice alongside
political equality.
The Governor further stated that Dr. Ambedkar
played a pivotal role in eradicating caste-based discrimination and in ensuring
the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity as fundamental rights. He
also highlighted his contributions towards inclusive development, universal
adult franchise, labour welfare, and women’s empowerment.
He noted that the Government of India has
undertaken several initiatives for the upliftment of Scheduled Castes,
including scholarships, fellowships, and skill development programmes. He added
that the Government of Sikkim is actively implementing welfare schemes,
strengthening educational infrastructure, and ensuring equitable access to
opportunities at the grassroots level.
Further, he emphasised the strict implementation
of laws safeguarding the rights and dignity of Scheduled Castes, along with
legal aid and awareness programmes, and reiterated the State’s commitment to promoting
social harmony and inclusiveness. He urged all to uphold the ideals of Dr.
Ambedkar in thought and action to build a just and progressive society.
Earlier, Social Welfare secretary Sarika Pradhan,
in her welcome address, extended her warm greetings to the dignitaries and
attendees. She highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s enduring legacy as a symbol of
intellectual excellence and commitment to justice and human dignity, and noted
that his ideals continue to guide inclusive policies and governance in Sikkim.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial
lighting of the lamp, accompanied by chanting of mantras by Buddhist monks.
Floral tributes were offered to Dr. Ambedkar by the dignitaries.
A brief biography of Dr. Ambedkar was presented by
Dr. Bhumika Poudyali, who highlighted his life, achievements, and message of
“Educate, Agitate, Organise,” which continues to inspire generations.
During the programme, the publication “Bhim
Chetna” was released, followed by the release of a collection of poems titled
“Footsteps”.
Felicitations were presented to distinguished
personalities by ASSCWA, including West PandamMLAL.B. Das, Salghari-ZoomMLA
Madan Cintury, chief secretary R. Telang and PakyongSPParuRuchal.
The occasion also witnessed the felicitation of State
toppers from the Scheduled Caste community, with Raman Darjee of Government
Senior Secondary School, Yangyang securing 95.4% in class X (2025), and
ApiyaBiswakarma of PM Shri Senior Secondary School, Jorethang securing 96.2% in
class XII (2025).
The event also had the presence of Speaker, Deputy
Speaker, Cabinet ministers, Member of Parliament, MLAs, advisors and chairpersons.
