GANGTOK,: Sikkim is celebrating a remarkable achievement as Dr. Kalzang Topgyal Bhutia, son of Sonam Detchu Bhutia and Hissey Doma Bhutia, has secured the top rank in the M.D. examination of 2025. He has been awarded the Gold Medal in Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy, establishing himself as one of the brightest young skin specialists in the country.

Dr. Bhutia completed his studies at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal in Manipur.

Speaking about his achievement, Dr. Bhutia expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey. “I owe much of this achievement to my Teacher and my guide Dr. Ranjeeta Sapam, whose guidance and encouragement helped me push my limits,” he said. He also thanked his parents for their unwavering support, sharing, “To my parents, for your unwavering support and words of encouragement to me when I used to feel most unsure of myself.”

Dr. Bhutia also acknowledged the role of his close friends, adding, “And my closest friend Dr. Nathan and Dr. Bidya Lakshmi for always being there to lift me up when I always doubted myself.”

The journey to becoming a gold medallist was not easy. Long hours of study, rigorous practical training, and moments of self-doubt tested his resolve. Yet, with determination, mentorship and support from loved ones, Dr. Bhutia excelled in one of the most challenging medical examinations in the country.

His success has not only brought pride to his family but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring medical students in Sikkim, Manipur and beyond.
