SORENG, : The 18th edition of the Late L.D. Kazi Memorial Gold Cup football
tournament kicked off on Thursday at Chakung Ground in Soreng district. The
inaugural day was attended by Sarda Tamang Golay, spouse of Chief Minister PS
Golay, as the chief guest along with her son and area MLA Aditya Golay, who
also serves as the chief patron of the organizing committee.
In
the opening match, local football club Singling SC edged past Kanchenjunga FC
Siliguri 2-1. Despite heavy rain, Singling FC took the lead in the first half
through a goal by striker Raman. The Siliguri club, battling the downpour,
tried hard to find an equalizer. However, they failed to capitalize on several
scoring opportunities, while Singling SC’s defense held firm. The first half
ended 1-0.
The
second half saw a much-improved and disciplined Kanchenjunga FC Siliguri, who
showcased better coordination and passing to equalize the score at 1-1.
However, a free kick awarded to Singling SC in the final moments of the match
proved decisive. Captain Uttam Rai brilliantly converted the opportunity,
securing a 2-1 victory for Singling SC, who now advances to the next round.
In
her inaugural address, chief guest Sarda Tamang Golay extended best wishes to
all participating teams and emphasized the importance of the tournament in
preserving Sikkim’s sporting spirit and cultural heritage. She also spoke about
the role of sports in promoting unity, discipline, and youth engagement across
the state.
She
also conveyed greetings to the LD Kazi family and expressed her appreciation
for the people of Chakung for their continued support to Chief Minister PS
Golay and MLA (Soreng) Aditya Golay. She highlighted several initiatives of the
State government, including the City Runner Bus services for public and the
Pink City Runner Bus services, aimed at promoting women’s safety and
empowerment. She further shared the vision of building a modern and developed
Sikkim, while recalling the contributions of Late LD Kazi in introducing
democracy to the State.
This
year, 16 renowned and established football clubs from across the State and
beyond are participating in the LD Kazi Memorial Gold Cup football tournament.
The final is scheduled for November 8, and Chief Minister PS Golay is expected
to attend.
A
major football event in Sikkim, the L.D. Kazi Gold Cup is returning after a gap
of nearly six years, with the last edition held in 2019. The tournament carries
a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh for the winners and Rs. 5 lakh for the runners-up,
in addition to trophies.
On
Friday, two matches are scheduled. In the first match, Sikkim Police takes on
Georgian FC Kalimpong while the second game is between Steve Brothers Malbazar
and Aakraman SC.
