Singling SC overcomes Kanchenjunga FC in LD Kazi Cup opening match

SORENG, : The 18th edition of the Late L.D. Kazi Memorial Gold Cup football tournament kicked off on Thursday at Chakung Ground in Soreng district. The inaugural day was attended by Sarda Tamang Golay, spouse of Chief Minister PS Golay, as the chief guest along with her son and area MLA Aditya Golay, who also serves as the chief patron of the organizing committee.

In the opening match, local football club Singling SC edged past Kanchenjunga FC Siliguri 2-1. Despite heavy rain, Singling FC took the lead in the first half through a goal by striker Raman. The Siliguri club, battling the downpour, tried hard to find an equalizer. However, they failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, while Singling SC’s defense held firm. The first half ended 1-0.

The second half saw a much-improved and disciplined Kanchenjunga FC Siliguri, who showcased better coordination and passing to equalize the score at 1-1. However, a free kick awarded to Singling SC in the final moments of the match proved decisive. Captain Uttam Rai brilliantly converted the opportunity, securing a 2-1 victory for Singling SC, who now advances to the next round.

In her inaugural address, chief guest Sarda Tamang Golay extended best wishes to all participating teams and emphasized the importance of the tournament in preserving Sikkim’s sporting spirit and cultural heritage.
