GANGTOK, : The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Sports Wing is
scheduled to organise the ‘5Km Chief Minister’s Run’ in Gangtok on August 29 to
mark National Sports Day.
The run is being organised with the objective of promoting sports and
encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The event will be held in four age categories.
At a press conference held on Tuesday, Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, MLA of
Syari constituency and Vice-President-in-charge of the SKM Sports Wing, said
the State government under Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay has been
giving priority to sports and promoting the importance of health and fitness.
He said a sports-friendly ecosystem had been created in Sikkim since the
SKM government came to power, with development taking place across various
sporting disciplines. He also noted that national-level sporting events are now
being organised in the state and athletes from outside Sikkim have shown
interest in participating. The Chief Minister is expected to flag off the run.
SKM Sports Wing General Secretary Nirmal Chhetri said the event, being
organised under the theme ‘Run for Healthier Sikkim’, would have free
registration. Participants can register by scanning the QR code or at a
registration centre to be set up on MG Marg.
The four categories are Under-17 (13–17 years), Under-35 (18–35 years),
36–45 years and 46 years and above. The organisers have set a limit of 500
participants, with registration open until August 28.
The race will begin at Ridge Park and proceed towards Zero Point,
followed by Vajra, before returning to Zero Point. The route will then pass
through Bhanu Path, Dukhit Pan Dokan and the Secretariat before proceeding to
Palace Gate and concluding at Ridge Park.
The route will cover approximately five kilometres.
Hydration centres will be set up at Ridge Park and Zero Point. Technical
support for the event is being provided by Basant Pradhan and Bharati Gurung.
The total prize money for the competition is expected to be around Rs
2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh. All participants completing the race will receive
finisher medals and certificates.
Sikkim Sports Development Board Chairman Rinzing Wangyal Chopel said the
popularity of marathons has been growing in the State and the event is aimed at
further encouraging participation in sports and fitness on National Sports Day.
