GANGTOK,: Two glorious strikes from SencheyBhutia helped Darjeeling’s St.
Joseph’s College overcome Georgian FC Kalimpong 2-0 on Sunday and clinch a
semi-final berth in the ongoing State-level Independence Day Football
Tournament for the Sir ChogyalTashiNamgyal Memorial Cup 2026.
In
an evenly matched contest, Senchey drew first blood in the 58th minute with
arguably the tournament’s best goal so far. Picking up a pass just outside the
box, he unleashed a powerful curling effort that flew into the Georgian FC net
beyond the goalkeeper’s despairing dive.
Seven
minutes later, St. Joseph’s College launched a counter-attack after relentless
pressure from Georgian FC, with the ball reaching their right winger outside
the box with space in front.
Senchey
showed great composure as he chipped the ball over the Georgian FC goalkeeper
and into the net to make it 2-0 in the 65th minute.
Both
sides played attacking football and created several opportunities to find the
net. However, terrific goalkeeping at both ends kept the scoreline intact.
For
his outstanding performance and match-winning contribution, SencheyBhutia was
named Man of the Match.
The
prestigious tournament is being organised by the Sikkim Football Association.
The
match was witnessed by SFA executives, along with distinguished guests
SudipPradhan, Vice President of SISCO Bank, and Dr DonatusKujur, Principal of
St. Joseph’s College.
The
third quarter-final match on Monday will see SSB take on Sikkim Aakraman FC.
