Strong, Healthy Nails

SHAHNAZ HUSAIN

White, strong nails free from chips and cracks are what every woman wishes for. Natural-looking nails—long, smooth, and polished—enhance the beauty of hands. While genetics play a major role (if your parents had strong nails, you’re likely to as well), proper care and nourishment through a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition, and a consistent nail-care routine are essential for growth and strength.

A perfect manicure is more than just filing and polishing. Nails must withstand everyday stresses like typing, cleaning, or sports, while also resisting infections. Children’s nails grow the fastest, while adult fingernails grow about 1/11 inch per month, slowing down with age.

Nails are made of laminated layers of keratin, the same protein found in hair. Ideally, they should be uniform in colour, smooth, shiny, and free from pits or grooves. Simple Ayurvedic remedies can help with common problems such as brittleness and splitting, keeping nails strong and beautiful.

Daily Nail Care

Healthy nails reflect both grooming and internal health. A pinkish hue suggests good circulation, while a bluish tinge may indicate poor blood flow. Always protect your hands: wear rubber gloves while doing household chores.

The cuticle—the skin around the nail—must remain soft and smooth. Otherwise, it sticks to the nail and drags as it grows. Massage cream or oil daily, especially after washing with detergents or in dry weather. Almond oil is excellent for strengthening nails. Dip your fingertips in warm almond oil for ten minutes daily, then massage it into the nails and cuticles. Never cut cuticles; instead, soften them with cream after soaking in warm water and gently push them back with a cotton bud. Avoid sharp instruments for cleaning under nails—use cotton buds instead.

Protection from the Sun and Nail Polish

Yes, the sun can affect nails. Pastel shades like beige and pink may yellow with sun exposure, and frequent use of nail polish can also cause discoloration. Allow your nails to go polish-free sometimes. To prevent damage, apply a transparent base coat before using coloured polish, and use a clear or UV-resistant top coat for protection. Sunscreen can also be applied on nails.

If nails develop a yellowish tinge, gently buff with a fine-grain emery board or chamois leather to restore shine. Home remedies such as soaking nails in baking soda solution, rubbing lemon slices, or soaking in diluted lemon juice daily can also help.

Diet for Strong Nails

For brittle nails, increase protein and calcium intake. Include skimmed milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, and sprouts in your diet. A ten-day gelatin programme can also help: dissolve a teaspoon of gelatin in boiling water, let it cool, mix with fruit juice, and drink daily.

Style with Care

When cutting nails, always use clippers and file in one direction to avoid splits. As for nail colours, dark shades are trendy, but softer shades like pink, mauve, ivory, or brown tones—coffee, bronze, copper, seashell—can be enhanced with glitter or nail art for a stylish finish.

Strong, well-cared-for nails not only look beautiful but also reflect your overall health. With the right care and a little pampering, healthy nails are within reach.
