GANGTOK, : The Summer Open Snooker
Championship organised by Snooker Association of Sikkim (SAS) to commemorate 50
years of Sikkim’s Statehood started today at Q Club, Deorali. The tournament
features participants not only from India but also from Nepal and will continue
until May 16.
The tournament was declared
open by Rural Development minister Arun Upreti.
Minister Upreti extended his
best wishes to all participants and expressed hope that a snooker player from
Sikkim would one day achieve national and international recognition.
SAS president Basu Sharma
informed that the tournament features 61 top-tier snooker players from various
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur and Sikkim as well as from
Nepal.
The tournament has a prize pool
of Rs. 5.9 lakh with the winner receiving Rs. 2.5 lakh. The runner-up will receive Rs. 1.5 lakh,
while each semi-finalist will receive Rs. 50,000.
Additional awards include Rs. 50,000 for the highest break, Rs. 20,000
for the best player of the tournament and Rs. 20,000
for the best emerging player.
