Dear
Editor,
I write to
pay tribute to a truly forgotten heroine of Sikkim—Helen Lepcha, also known as
Savitri Devi, the only known freedom fighter from the state.
Born in
1902 in the serene village of Sangmu, about 15 km from Namchi, Sikkim, Smt Helen
Lepcha was the daughter of Shri Achung Lepcha. In 1920, deeply inspired by the
ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, she joined India’s
freedom movement. She actively fought against the oppressive British regime,
displaying courage and resilience. So moved was Mahatma Gandhi by her spirit
that he bestowed upon her the name Savitri Devi.
In an era
when women's participation in politics was rare, especially in remote regions
like Sikkim, Savitri Devi’s contribution is both inspiring and significant.
Yet, her legacy remains largely unrecognized.
Through
your esteemed platform, I appeal to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, the
state government, and the citizens of Gangtok to take steps to honour her
memory. A statue, memorial, or naming a road after her would be a fitting
tribute to her contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
As Sikkim
continues its journey of modern development, it is equally important that we
remember those who laid the foundations of our freedom. Honouring Savitri Devi
would not only reclaim a lost chapter of our history but also inspire
generations to come.
Your’s etc,
Rohit
